Hypnotherapy for procrastination

Hypnotherapy for procrastination is basically a way of stopping you letting your thoughts hurt you. Getting you to act. Become ‘unstuck’.

Procrastination means that you put off something important. Even though you know that this is working against your best interests and have negative consequences.

It's a common behaviour, but it can become problematic when it negatively impacts your well-being.

What causes your procrastination?

Procrastination can be linked to depression, anxiety, low self-esteem and ADHD amongst others. It can also be caused by the present bias. This is when you’re more motivated by immediate gratification than long-term rewards.

In effect you’ve lost sight of your goals.

What does procrastination do to you?
Procrastination can have external consequences, like getting a zero on an assignment, or internal consequences, like feeling anxious.

Why do you procrastinate?

As I outlined above people procrastinate for many reasons, including fear of failure, perfectionism, and mental health conditions.

To expand, here’s a bit more about where your procrastination may stem from.

A fear of failure. You avoid starting a task because you worry you’ll fail. This is a defence mechanism avoid the anxiety and stress you imagine you’re going to put yourself through.
Perfectionism. You hold off because you feel you won’t do something well enough.
Depression and anxiety. You think, “What’s the point?” So you lose your motivation, drive, and ambition.
Obsessive worry. You ruminate round and round in circles going nowhere. This makes procrastination worse.
Feeling overwhelmed. You can’t see what to do next. It all seems too much. Where do you start?
You’re prone to distraction. Everything else seem so much more interesting. You need to focus. Research shows that it can take around 25 minutes to get back to focusing on a task after being distracted.

Can you recognise this in your current thinking?

You’re wasting time.

And why do we waste it? This precious resource.

Because we think we have an unlimited amount of it. Now we don’’t.

We think we’ll get to it later.

Marcus Aurelius says, “You could be good today, but instead you choose tomorrow”.

(Note the Roman Emperor, Marcus Aurelius, in the man in the first few minutes of ‘Gladiator’.)

We think we have endless tomorrows.

No we don’t. The clock is ticking.

It’s known as the biggest lie in the world, “I’ll do it tomorrow”.

Or you say you’ll do when the kids are older. I’ll do it later. I’ll do it when things go back to normal.

But you don’t know that you have that.

“We Live Only Now. Everything Else Is either past or unknown”. Marcus Aurelius

That’s the power of to drive you on. You do not know how many more future moments you may get so make the best of now.

How does Hypnotherapy for procrastination help?

Basically we look at why you can’t move forward.

And, using hypnosis, remove the barriers of stress anxiety, low confidence - whatever you think is your reason - and help you move for forward.

In non-technical terms, stop you fannying about.

Or, to put it another way, we’ll give you the mindset to trust yourself, make decisions, and take action instead of overthinking.

And this creates a virtuous cycle. You gain experience by making decisions and taking action, and that learning from experience is a way to improve skills and grow.

What is hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy for procrastination is simply a way of getting you to relax and overcome the barriers in your mind that are stopping you move forward.

In other words think of hypnotherapy as a state of calm and relaxation where you can see your way out of the woods.

Who am I?

I’m James Thomas. A Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapist. In relation to hypnotherapy for procrastination I think it’s best summed up by this quote:

Overthinking is the biggest waste of human energy. Trust yourself, make a decision, and gain more experience. There is no such thing as perfect. You cannot think your way into perfection, just take action”.

I cover Yorkshire and Lincolnshire with consultancy rooms in Leeds, York, Lincoln and Louth.
