Let’s be clear what hypnotherapy for fertility is.
It’s a complementary therapy for infertility.
It can help you manage your stress and anxiety. Dialling them down.
And doing this - improving your overall well-being - increases your chances of conception.
Why it might be worth giving hypnotherapy for fertility a try
Not everyone feels happy or excited when they're trying to have a baby.
It can feel like it’s taking over your life. Especially if:
. friends all round you are getting pregnant
. people keep asking, “When are you having a baby?”
. what should be fun becomes a necessity
. what should be spontaneous is mapped out on a chart
. you can feel sadness, incomplete, hopeless.
So where does hypnotherapy fit in?
It helps you to relax. Enjoy the process. And when you’re relaxed you’re more likely to conceive.
What we can focus on?
Relaxing.
For example, the two week wait (TWW) is the time between ovulation and when your period is expected. It can also refer to the time between fertility treatment and a positive pregnancy test. Don’t stress.
Stop Obsessing Over Possible Pregnancy Symptoms.
OK, it’s probably unlikely we can dial this down to zero, but we can work together to make you calmer. Remember that many of the early signs of pregnancy are caused by the hormones that are naturally present during the luteal phase (the second half of your menstrual cycle, when your body prepares for pregnancy. It occurs after ovulation and lasts until your period begins) leading up to your period. This explains why, in, a lot of women, why those months when you were sure you were pregnant because you felt pregnant, didn’t result in a positive test - you were too anxious worrying about whether you have the “signs."
Keep busy.
In other words don’t dwell. Ever notice how time seems to slow down when you’re either really nervous about something or anxiously awaiting a deadline? It’s like the night before an exciting holiday has the same number of hours as every other night, but they tick by soooooo much slower. The two-week wait can be like this. One way to help the time go by faster, or at least at normal speed, is by keeping busy. Hypnotherapy for fertility helps by giving you the skills to focus elsewhere.
Go Easy on the Pregnancy Tests.
A watched pot never boils. Some people who are trying to conceive develop an addiction to taking pregnancy tests during the two-week wait. There's a big difference between waiting until your period is late and testing, compared with taking multiple tests before your period is even late.
For example, if you've been purchasing pregnancy tests in bulk online because you go through them so quickly, or you've got a big stash in your home: cut back. Let go. The rationale for taking an early pregnancy test is often that if you're pregnant, you can find out sooner—except it doesn't always work like that and causes more stress than relief.
Wait the Full Two Weeks Before Taking a Pregnancy Test.
Even early pregnancy tests won't give you accurate results until one or two days before your period is late. If you take it much earlier than that, you might get a false negative result—in other words, you are pregnant but the test is negative—and feel disappointed for no reason at all.
The best option? Wait until your period is at least one day late. That means if your period is due Tuesday, don't take a test until Wednesday or Thursday. If you have irregular cycles, consider waiting until the later end of your usual range. Otherwise, you're just setting yourself up for frustration and disappointment. The two-week wait can be stressful for people who are trying to conceive. Be kind to yourself. We can work on this.
You’re worried about the birth.
If you naturally catastrophise you can get anxious about what lies ahead - the birthing process, the pain, a possible cesarian, post-natal depression, postpartum psychosis, will your milk kick in. And you’re not even pregnant yet.
I’m happy to work with you on this. I’m a hypnobirther.
Hypnosis and hypnotherapy.
Hypnotherapy for fertility is using hypnosis as a treatment for you state of mind - that’s the ‘therapy’ bit. Hypnosis as a calming technique.
And it’s simply a way to land a message deeper inside your thinking. Change your self-talk for the better.
How successful is hypnosis for IVF?
Infertility is seen as 12 months of unprotected sex and failing to conceive, so some couples think about in vitro fertilisation (IVF).
And using hypnosis during embryo transfer (ET) in IVF cycles significantly improves outcomes. The scholarly article here by Levitas, in his research, found that the group that used hypnosis during ET had higher implantation and clinical pregnancy rates compared to the control group that did not use hypnosis.
How does cortisol affect getting pregnant?
Several studies have found that biological markers of stress, such as high cortisol levels, are linked to infertility. Seven out of 11 studies that compared cortisol levels in fertile and infertile people found significantly higher cortisol levels in those facing infertility.
Cortisol can put your body on high alert and in a state of constant stress, so reducing it is kinder for you.
