In dictionary terms procrastination is, “the action of delaying or postponing something.” Hypnotherapy for procrastination is designed to get you moving.
To be blunt, in everyday terms, to stop fannying about.
That’s not meant to sound glib or callous, just stop you wasting time. It’s your most precious resource.
What is the emotional root of procrastination?
Before we can start any hypnotherapy for procrastination let’s go through some of the thoughts that could be blocking you
In modern parlance you’re task averse. For example, you think something to have to do is boring, frustrating, or somehow unpleasant. What I’m saying here is that you have to be bigger than your excuses. Get it done.
Feeling overwhelmed. You don’t know where to start it’s unclear and it all seems to much. What we’re woking on here is to quit the talking and begin doing. Give you permission to start to try. There’s. Motivational poster that sums it up nicely, “YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE GREAT TO START, BUT YOU HAVE TO START TO BE GREAT”
Perfectionism. Everything has to be just right. Checked, re-checked, re-re-rechecked and on it goes. Or it doesn’t. Your stuck in a loop, let’s get you out of it. Remember nobody is perfect and all you can do is your best. In a lot of cases best fit is enough then move on.
What’s called, “Disconnecting from the future self.” You’re not owning the consequences of your delay. You’re indifferent to it, as if it’s something that someone else will have to live with.
Delayed outcomes. The reward seems to lie too far away. Out of reach.
Low motivation. You can’t get going. For example, you think the reward is too small and insignificant.
Expected effort. You feel that there’s too much input needed. It’s too hard.
Inertia. You’re at a standstill, can’t get going.
It’s not clear. You know you need to get going. It’s gnawing away, but you’re not quite sure what you’re supposed to be doing. The goals aren’t clearly defined.
Doom mongering. Technically called cognitive biases. You don’t believe you’ll succeed.
Time-management. You just cant’ or won’t prioritise. It simply just doesn’t register as important to you.
Problematic traits. What we mean here is that getting stated feels ‘too organised’ you see yourself as an impulsive free spirit. To be a doer is dour.
You’re a worrier. Put simply, you’re full of worry, anxiety and fear. You see disaster and catastrophe ahead.
Can hypnotherapy help you stop procrastinating?
Simple answer is yes. With hypnotherapy for procrastination, working together, we can reduce stress and anxiety, so you feel more confident and determined to achieve your goals.
Basically you and me increase your motivation. How? By accessing your subconscious mind, hypnotherapy can help clear barriers that stress, anxiety, and negative thinking can create.
Does the NHS recommend hypnotherapy?
Simple answer, yes. Although it’s not available on the NHS, they do endorse it.
How does hypnotherapy work?
It’s a way of relaxing so I can land a message deep in your subconscious, then you can change your thoughts and behaviours for the better.
In fact you’ve hypnotised yourself thousands of times in your life already without it having the name ‘hypnosis’.
For example:
. If you’ve day dreamed
. Driven your car somewhere, stopped and thought, “I can’t remember getting here.”
. If you’ve started reading book in the day, then look top and it’s now dark
. If you’ve watching a box set in the day, then look top and it’s now dark
. You’re playing sport and you’re ‘in the zone.’
Basically it’s a form of relaxed focus
Looking at Stoicism. When hypnotherapy for procrastination becomes philosophy.
Dealing with procrastination is an age old challenge. It dates back thousands of years and has been long studied. Just to give you another way in to understand yourself and how we’d be working together its worth watching here.
The Stoics - a group of philosophers - are quoted in Gladiator two. In Gladiator, the original, the most famous Stoic appears in the opening ten minutes. It’s Richard Harris playing Marcus Aurelius.
Who am I?
I’m James Thomas a Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapist. During my late 40s and early 50s I wasted too much time. I over ate and drank way too much. I stopped. Realised I was wasting my time. I ran seven marathons , did 3 Iron Man events, climbed Mont Blanc, took up rowing and the piano. I can’t get the time back that I lost. I’m just more aware of wasting any more.
